How it works
From the first call to the final order
No two family cases run the same, but most pass through these five steps. Here's what happens at each, and what we'll ask of you.
- 01
Step 1: The first call
Theo asks a few questions, checks for conflicts and books a meeting with the lawyer who fits your case.
- 02
Step 2: The first meeting
Forty-five minutes with a lawyer, at our office or by video. You'll leave with your options, a likely cost and the next step.
- 03
Step 3: The plan and the paperwork
If you hire us, you'll get a written plan within the month. Your paralegal starts the financial disclosure with you.
- 04
Step 4: Agreement or hearing
We negotiate, mediate or prepare for court, and we tell you before every step what it's for and what it costs.
- 05
Step 5: The final order
A judge signs the decree or order. We explain what it says, what you have to do next, and how to change it later.
Before the first meeting
What to bring
Bring what you can find easily. Don't take anything that isn't yours, and don't go through your spouse's phone.
Any court papers
A petition, an order or a notice you've been served with, if there is one.
Income
Your last few pay stubs and last year's tax return.
Accounts and debts
Recent statements for bank accounts, retirement accounts, loans and cards.
The home
A mortgage statement or lease.
The children's weeks
A short note on school, activities and who usually does what.
Your questions
Write them down. A first meeting goes fast.
